FAQs

Gutter Cleaning FAQs:

Great news!!! No, you do not need to be home! We know that you are busy with life, so rest assured we want to make having your gutters professionally cleaned as convenient as possible. We don’t want you to have to stay home from work or other activities to sit home and wait for us. All the work is performed from outside so we just simply need you to make sure there is a working outside water spigot that is left on for us and we will take care of the rest! We only need 1 working water spigot to be on, any location is fine either front, back or side!
If for some reason you absolutely want to be home, we do offer an “Appointment Service” – for an added charge of $79.95 to the regular gutter cleaning price, customers may select a date and time of their choosing (2 hour window – Mon-Fri – 10 am to 3 pm). The $79.95 fee must be prepaid and is non-refundable.
Typically, we do not call before coming. On any given day, several variables can affect how many crews we send out or how many homes a crew can service in one day. It’s almost impossible to know for sure if a crew can get to every home on a route. We do not want to make a promise we can’t keep by telling you we will be there and then not showing up. If for some reason you absolutely want to be home, please refer to the FAQ answer above.
We are licensed and insured. But just being “insured” is NOT enough, having the PROPER insurance coverage is a MUST, and unlike most companies we have something called “Care, Custody & Control” coverage so you can rest assured and trust that you are in good hands with Jersey Shore Gutter Cleaning & Power Washing. We take your protection and peace of mind very seriously. Beware of “fly by night” companies that might have an attractive price but do not have any insurance OR proper insurance. Beware most landscapers, painters, handymen, etc. are NOT properly insured to go on roofs or clean gutters. See our license numbers below:
Most home maintenance professionals (including Bob Villa, Sears spokesman, HGTV Pro and This Old House) recommend cleaning and flushing the gutters a minimum of 2x per year, (summer and fall) and up to 6x per year depending on the type and number of trees around your property. At Jersey Shore Gutter Cleaning & Power Washing our most popular service is our 4x per year automatic recurring cleaning plan. Our most effective service is our 6x per year automatic recurring cleaning plan which will ensure that your gutters are always clean.
The Gutter runs horizontally across your home at the lowest edge of the roof. The Leader (Downspout) starts under the Gutter and runs down the side of your home, vertically.
Yes. New Jersey State sales tax law clearly indicates sales tax applies to all gutter services including installations except a whole house complete gutter installation. The form of payment has no bearing on Sales Tax.
Although gutter cleaning is a dangerous, dirty, messy, and time-consuming job, we create a controlled environment to do it in the safest and neatest and efficient way possible. These are the things that set Jersey Shore Gutter Cleaning apart from our competition.

  1. All gutters are cleaned out by hand and the debris is dropped into a pile on the ground. We do NOT use leaf blowers like many companies do for a few reasons. First, they make a mess by blowing wet mucky debris all over, possibly getting on your siding, windows, decks, patios, walkways, driveways, outdoor furniture, cars etc. Second, some blowers can produce winds in excess of 100 mph and you do not want any wind that powerful anywhere near your house or roof because it can easily cause damage to your home and roof. Third, it is very dangerous to carry a leaf blower up a ladder or while walking a roof it can cause someone to lose balance and fall, also the blower can be dropped and cause damage to persons or property. (We know a company that had a worker drop a blower from the ladder and it landed on another worker below and caused a serious injury).
  2. All gutters and downspouts are flushed with water.
  3. Gutters are inspected for proper pitch / angle to make sure water is flowing towards the downspouts and draining properly.
  4. All downspouts are inspected to make sure water is coming out the bottom and draining properly and that there are no clogs or blockage.
  5. Any loose spikes are re-nailed, and any missing spikes are replaced.
  6. FREE Roof inspection which includes checking roof condition, ridge cap, roof vents, attic fan cover, roof vent pipes and any other noticeable possible problems or issues.
  7. The technicians will meticulously rake up and bag any piles of debris that they made on the ground. They will either leave the bags by the curb or throw them into your trash can.
  8. Finally, the technicians will rinse off any loose debris that may have gotten on the outside of the gutters and leaders, the siding, the windows, or the ground.

The technician will then leave a receipt in the front door to let you know they were there and completed the job. Our company policy at Jersey Shore Gutter Cleaning is: “Leave the customers property as clean or cleaner than it was when we arrived.”

You will be left with a 30 day no clog guarantee and the peace of mind that your home is protected against costly water damage that’s the Jersey Shore Gutter Cleaning difference.

Our Prepaid Service Contract is a premium gutter cleaning service that consists of 2-6 prepaid, prescheduled, automatic, recurring gutter cleanings per year. They are generally scheduled for early spring (March), early summer (June), late summer (August), early fall (October), late fall (November/December), and winter (January). Some benefits of a Prepaid Service Contract is that you get 10% off your regular gutter cleaning price, a 10% discount on any other services offered, priority scheduling without having to remember to call, and more! This is the best way to ensure the best gutter maintenance for your home.
A screen charge is an additional charge applied to all customers that have any type of screens or covers on their gutters. When gutters are covered by any form of leaf protection, they are obstructed from access. Therefore, our men typically need to remove some or all the screens to clean the gutters. Sometimes, we can clean the gutters through the screens but as you can imagine, the entire cleaning process takes more time and care than an open gutter system with no covers. Oftentimes, the screens are old, brittle, battered and in poor condition, making the job even more difficult and time consuming, for this reason in most cases the covers need to be permanently removed and NOT reinstalled. Gutter guards typically do not work, if they did you would not be calling us to clean them! Some gutter companies will not even do the job if the gutters are covered by a gutter protection system.
Check your invoice. It may indicate that your gutters are in need of repair or replacement. The gutters may have been perfectly cleaned yet they still may leak – WHY? Gutters are like cars in that just because you give your car an oil change, it doesn’t mean that you will have fixed every problem your car has. Although the oil change was a necessary part of routine maintenance, it clearly is not a solution to all the problems the vehicle may have. The same is true for your gutters. Although most customers’ gutter problems are resolved with routine cleanings, some customers require additional work. Keep in mind, your gutters are outside of your home 24/7/365. They are subject to the elements all the time, whether it's raining or not. Eventually, the weather takes its toll on everything outside your home including your gutters, especially if they have been neglected and not cleaned or maintained on a regular consistent schedule.

No, our primary concern in performing a gutter cleaning service is to ensure the gutter system is clean and clear so that water coming off your roof is properly distributed away from your home. In essence, we clean the gutters to ensure proper functionality. Although the outside of the gutters are rinsed to wash away any “loose” debris, we do not hand wash or scrub them as part of the standard gutter cleaning service. We do offer “gutter brightening” as an additional service that will clean the outside of the gutters.
Gutters are made from thin gauge metals (aluminum, copper, steel, etc.). When gutters are made, they are formed as straight as possible. When those gutters are installed, they are pitched to “bend” lower towards the leader/downspout. Gutters can come off pitch for many reasons, (especially not cleaning regularly) and when they do, it is nearly impossible to “bend” them back to a proper position. This is comparable to the metal on a car or soda can. If that metal gets bent or damaged, it is unlikely to be put back to its original form without specific tools, machines, or fillers.
We do not perform roof repairs. Although our technicians are trained to spot roof damage, our focus is on the gutter and leader system.

No. We are cleaning experts. We prefer to leave the painting or staining up to the paint pros.
This is a tricky one. Oil and rust stains come in many varieties due to the size of the stain, the source of the stain (food oil, vehicle oil, well water rust, battery acid rust, metal rust, etc.), the material that is stained, location of the stain and the length of time the stain has been there. It is very important to notify us of any specific stain you want removed. Typically, there is an additional charge for this as additional work is required, different products are used, and more than one visit may be necessary. Many times, oil stains cannot be completely removed and can only be lightened, and a shadow may still remain. Many times, we can get various types of stains out, but we don’t like to set high expectations for these types of stains just in case.
All our products are environmentally safe, non-toxic, and biodegradable. We only use products and processes that are set forth by the siding manufacturers specifications for cleaning. We use a special proprietary mixture of soaps, cleaners, detergents, and algaecides we like to call it our “Shark Attack” cleaning blend because it kills on contact all organic growth on your home. Rest assured our “Shark Attack” blend is not strong enough to kill any of your plants, flowers, or vegetation. Of course, just to be sure, we take the highest precautions necessary including pre-wetting with water and with a neutralizer all vegetation before spraying our mixture, wetting and neutralizing during the soaping process, and post rinsing and neutralizing after spraying our mixture to ensure that no plants, flowers, or vegetation are damaged in the course of the service. Lastly, we will spray plant food similar to a miracle grow solution to give some extra nutrients to the vegetation.
No, we do NOT use high pressure! Again, we only use products and processes that are set forth by the siding manufacturers specifications for cleaning in which case they specify only using low pressure along with our “Shark Attack” proprietary mixture of cleaners. We use special custom-built machines unlike the machines sold in big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes. These machines are set to use low pressure and high volume when cleaning siding. Powerwashing can be a very dangerous job. The use of mechanical, gas-powered, machines requires a lot of technical training and knowledge. All our technicians undergo a technical training program prior to being allowed to operate any machines independent of manager supervision. Every precaution is taken to ensure the viability of your home and belongings. As a matter of fact, there may be instances where we decline to powerwash something due to our inspection and finding that the surface and/or material may not be in good enough condition to undergo the cleaning process.

Roof Washing FAQs:

Typically, roofs develop one of two conditions – moss and bacteria. The moss is a simple plant that will grow up, around and under shingles. The bacteria are a species of cyanobacteria called Gloeocapsa magma. These bacteria gained notoriety in the 1990’s and since has spread throughout the United States and Canada. The main reason for the rapid spread and noticeability of these cyanobacteria is thought to be that the roof shingle manufacturers switched from using a paper/asphalt/ceramic blend shingle in the 1980s to using a fiberglass shingle coated with asphalt which use limestone as a filler. These fiberglass shingles hold moisture longer and the Gloeocapsa magma bacteria actually eats the limestone as food! This cyanobacteria causes substantial destruction to roofs causing shingle decay and loss of reflective power. Over time, Gloeocapsa magma breaks down the shingles by feeding off the limestone granules embedded in the shingles. This decreases a roof's ability to reflect ultra-violet rays of light and shortens the life of the roof. By the time the bacteria is visible, it likely has been present for several months or longer. Once the bacteria have become noticeable, the stains will continue to worsen year to year. As the growth holds moisture within shingles it will cause premature aging, rotting, and/or granule loss to your roof. As the bacterial colony grows, gravity pulls it downward, resulting in the smear-like stain down roofs. Most experts within the subject area conclude the bacteria to be harmful, if left untreated. The buildup of Gloeocaspa magma on residential properties will lead to earlier roof replacements, lowered property resale values, insurance companies canceling policies and increased utility costs as the black stained roofing draws in more heat.
It addition to it being an eye sore. Moss growth will create a spongy soft organic material that will retain moisture and water. This can lead to water being trapped under the shingles and eaves and often results in the worst possible outcome - mold growth on the subroof (plywood), soffits and rafters. The algae will lead to shingle degradation and shorten the life of your roof. It will cause premature aging, rotting, and/or granule loss to your roof. The buildup of Gloeocaspa magma on residential properties will lead to earlier roof replacements, lowered property resale values, insurance companies canceling policies and increased utility costs as the black stained roofing draws in more heat. Again, we only use products and processes that are set forth by the manufacturers specifications for cleaning in which case The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association specifies using a special properly proportioned mixture to clean the roof shingles. We use a stronger version of our “Shark Attack” special proprietary mixture of soaps, cleaners, detergents, and algaecides because it kills on contact all organic growth on your roof. Keeping in mind that the moss and bacteria on the roof are living organisms and we because we have to use a stronger version of our “Shark Attack” cleaners this strong blend can cause damage or kill vegetation. Of course, we take the highest precautions necessary including pre-wetting with water and with a neutralizer all vegetation before spraying our mixture, wetting and neutralizing during the soaping process, and post rinsing and neutralizing after spraying our mixture to try to ensure to the best of our ability that no plants, flowers, or vegetation are damaged in the course of the service. Lastly, we will spray plant food similar to a miracle grow type solution to give some extra nutrients to the vegetation.
Yes – if you know what you’re doing. You may find or read that powerwashers should not be used to clean roofs. This is because an inexperienced person with the wrong powerwashing machine can easily damage shingles. Our highly trained and highly experienced technicians use the proper equipment to get the job done. Our machines are custom designed to allow for pressure adjustments and pressure reductions whereas cheaper machines cannot do this. When performing roof washing, we use very low pressure. The machines are used for the volume of the water not for the pressure. Also, the far-reaching distance of the machines allow us to do the work much more safely by limiting how much the technicians has to move around at dangerous heights.
We highly suggest that you treat the entire roof for multiple reasons! First of all, just because you can’t see the bacteria does not mean it is not present. Even if certain areas of the roof appear clean, there is most likely invisible bacteria present. By the time that it becomes visible it has already been present and developing for months. So the parts of the roof that you think “look clean” will most likely have the bacteria become visible in the very near future. Next, if we only clean one side then the freshly cleaned section will look much cleaner and brighter then the uncleaned areas. This difference in cleanliness will be quite noticeable and will look uneven and aesthetically displeasing. Since we have a minimum service charge treating the entire roof is a much better value and much more cost effective. The crew is already on-site with the equipment set up, making it relatively easy to clean the entire roof. Finally, the last consideration is that if only one side of the roof is treated, there is always the chance that the invisible microscopic bacteria and moss spores are living on what appears to be the “clean” side of the roof and can easily cross back over to the newly cleaned side forming regrowth and dirty streaks in a matter of months. In summary, treating the entire roof has multiple advantages, including better long-term results, consistent appearance, cost-effectiveness, and prevention of regrowth. It's a more comprehensive approach to roof maintenance that addresses both visible and invisible issues.

Window Cleaning FAQs:

Window cleaning is priced in 3 basic components: A) Interior, B) exterior and C) sills, tracks and screens. Standard pricing does not include difficult or dangerous to reach windows, windows requiring significant furniture movement, windows with excessive window treatments and certain other special situations. Additional charges also apply to French style windows that do not have removable grids.
If you see spots on the exterior of the windows after they’ve been cleaned, it’s a very good chance you are looking at hard water stains. Without first cleaning the glass, it is very difficult to know if these stains exist on your windows. Hard water stains result from excessive mineral deposits in the water. The dirtier you allow the windows to become, the more the minerals in rainwater and the dust and dirt in the air wants to stick to the glass causing a semi-permanent spot. Standard window cleaning does not include hard water stain removal. We do offer glass spot and stain removal at an additional charge.
Yes, we do, if you choose that service. The screens are washed and dried. The frame of the screen is wiped down but if the frame is excessively dirty whereby wiping it down doesn’t get it clean enough, then a separate charge may apply. And if the aluminum frame is old and corroded there is no way to get the corrosion off.
Yes, we do – we will clean mirrors when they are permanently affixed to the wall (we do not remove and rehang them).
We may be able to clean your chandelier – this is determined on a case by case basis as decided by the salesman.
In most cases, yes. We are able to clean windows (interior and exterior) in the rain. Of course, windows will get wet in the rain anyway whenever it rains after we clean them, and this has no impact on the job.
